The Notion of Entropy in Harmony
We’ve been taught that chaos is the result of entropy, where systems naturally break down over time into disarray. What about chaos to order?. We’ve also been taught that chaos precipitates a new order. Of course, this is an assumption based on what we currently think we understand about the nature of reality and systems theory. Before we get too far, let’s look at a couple of existing definitions of entropy.
…a thermodynamic quantity representing the unavailability of a system’s thermal energy for conversion into mechanical work, often interpreted as the degree of disorder or randomness in the system.
… lack of order or predictability; gradual decline into disorder.
For those unfamiliar with my style, it’s been said I have a sense of radical curiosity. As a transformational coach, I’m always drilling down into my understanding with questions and more questions, some of them paradigm shifting in and of themselves. I like that sense of shifting perspectives, especially my own. It makes life so much more fun and exciting, sometimes with a unique sense of rediscovery.
Are natural systems designed to fall into decay or are they really unfolding into a more sublime order we may not be able to see, yet? I have a wide area of interests, some of them considered fringe. Out on the fringe, there’s a lot of really interesting stuff available that you won’t find elsewhere. One of those tasty tidbits came to me in mid-2021, shared in a post on Facebook initially. Published originally in 1964, two years after his passing, this collection of memoirs has been called The New Science.
Meandering Through the Memoirs
Wilbert Smith was the head of Canada’s UFO Investigation Program during the 1950s. It was funded by the Ministry of Transportation and called Project Magnet. Smith was a well-respected scientist and investigator. In his investigations, a strange thing happened. He was able to have conversations on occasion, with those he called ‘People from Elsewhere.’ The information they shared is far beyond our current understanding of physics and reality in general.
Just because it was far beyond us then, there has been some progress that lends credence to at least some of what Smith wrote in his journal. I suspect he never intended to share the information as he knew, even then, it would no doubt be completely scoffed at from the scientific community. Still, one of the items really stuck with me. ‘They’ expressed to him that their understanding of time was the measurement in the change of entropy. That caught my attention, specifically in relationship to the unfolding evolutionary leap humanity is experiencing currently.
Now the notion of work/life harmony has been on the table for some time in coaching circles, perhaps a few decades. Harmony in that sense isn’t a utopia of any kind, it’s the effective management of things within our control and a process for dealing with things not within our control. Things out of our control can seem chaotic, perhaps even what had been experienced as entropy that resolves to order; as a series of breakdowns that produce a breakthrough. Most are aware of the phrase ‘chaos to order.’ The shift in perception of time is most noticeable at the moment of the breakthrough. Sometimes it brings a sense of timelessness.
Chaos to Order – Prior Knowledge
How do we set ourselves up for such awe-inspired events to happen in our lives? As an educator for secondary and post secondary schools, I had to create lesson plans a lot. Consideration for such includes prior knowledge the students have, or are supposed to have for their greater understanding of the material about to be presented. It is critical to know the foundations of your listeners’ or students’ understanding. That will vary depending on multiple factors, including emotional and intellectual, in their prior learning in life, not just school.
Consider how knowledge is developed and passed on through generations. It happens in the external world through information exchange. The indigenous are known for their storytelling, though ancient texts also hold keys to great knowledge and understanding. Like Latin, considered a ‘dead’ language, the Vedas, written in Sanskrit between 1500 and 1200 BCE are the oldest known texts. I’ve heard they were 5 to 10 thousand years old, though Wikipedia disagrees. Be that as it may, they are rarely referenced. Dr. Ervin Laszlo’s work as well as the Global Harmony Association are based in Vedantic philosophy.
What is Vedantic philosophy? According to Vedanta, God is infinite existence, infinite consciousness, and infinite bliss. The term for this impersonal, transcendent reality is Brahman, the divine ground of being. Yet Vedanta also maintains that God can be personal as well, assuming human form in every age. The term Vedanta means in Sanskrit the “conclusion” (anta) of the Vedas, the earliest sacred literature of India. It applies to the Upanishads, which were elaborations of the Vedas, and to the school that arose out of the study (mimamsa) of the Upanishads.
So assuming form in any age is a bit much for some religions today, especially as a collective, yet the notion of finding a perfected form, fit and function (mission/purpose) in the world is not. Imagine if a growing number of people realized their co-creative capacity simultaneously. Would it be mayhem or momentum toward something greater, a natural order, perhaps?
Your Mission, Should You Decide to Accept It
Chaos is only patterns we don’t recognize, yet. A play off Mission Impossible is perfect for this scenario as it can be shifted to Mission I’m Possible. Starting with possibilities, we can reimagine our world differently and facilitate change ubiquitously. Each of us in our own way and then collectively with collaboration and cooperation. Creativity and imagination have always fueled an ascension in consciousness throughout history, incrementally. In the 21st century we now have the science that explains consciousness from a quantum perspective; fully acknowledging that where we put our attention, intention and interaction energy flows unimpeded and produces magical results in the physical world. Remember magic is just science we do not understand, yet.
